M. Ct. M. Chidambaram established the Indian Overseas Bank in 1937. Indian Overseas Bank opened three branches right away, one in Rangoon, one in Madras, and one in Karaikudi. After the success of the first three locations, the bank swiftly launched branches in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Due to World War II, the bank lost branches in Rangoon, Penang, and Singapore.
Following WWII, in 1945 or 1946, the bank opened branches in Colombo and Bangkok. In 1955, the bank established a branch in Hong Kong, China. Burma’s revolutionary government nationalised Indian Overseas Bank branches in Rangoon, Mandalay, and Moulmein in 1963. The Government of India nationalised Indian Overseas Bank in 1969.
